When to use a nickel strike

A thin preparation layer before the main bath

Nickel strike solution is used as a plating-preparation step before the main nickel deposit. Its purpose is to establish an adherent initial nickel layer on a correctly cleaned and activated compatible surface. It is not a replacement for the main Watts nickel plating solution and is not intended to provide the full decorative or functional build by itself.

The need for a strike depends on the base metal, alloy, existing finish, and preparation sequence. Difficult or critical surfaces may benefit from this additional step, but an unsuitable process can still produce poor adhesion. Confirm the exact substrate with technical support before processing an unfamiliar or valuable part.

This product is one gallon of nickel strike solution. A controlled electroplating setup generally also requires a compatible chemical-resistant tank, suitable anode arrangement, an adjustable direct-current power supply, connections, rinse stages, and substrate-specific cleaning and activation products. Follow the product instructions for the controlling equipment and operating requirements.

Do not use the strike bath to compensate for oil, polishing compound, oxide, scale, fingerprints, or inadequate rinsing. Prepare the surface completely, avoid touching it after activation, transfer promptly between steps, and run a same-material test coupon when possible. After striking, move the part into the appropriate main nickel bath according to the supplied process guidance.
