Bath Setup

Build a stable plating bath before processing customer parts.

  • Use a properly sized chemical-resistant tank.
  • Install temperature control, agitation, and filtration as required.
  • Position anodes evenly around the work area.
  • Verify concentration, pH, and temperature before plating.
  • Run a test panel before production work.

Surface Preparation

Most adhesion failures begin before the part reaches the plating bath.

  • Remove oil and grease with a compatible degreaser.
  • Mechanically clean, polish, or blast when needed.
  • Rinse thoroughly between every preparation step.
  • Activate the surface with the correct acid treatment.
  • Plate immediately after the final rinse.

pH Control

Small, measured corrections protect bath stability and deposit quality.

  • Measure pH before production and at operating temperature when applicable.
  • Use only compatible pH adjusters.
  • Add adjuster slowly with good agitation.
  • Retest after every small correction.
  • Record the date, reading, and amount added.

Replenishment

Track bath use instead of waiting for finish quality to fall.

  • Log amp-hours, plated surface area, and bath age.
  • Watch for slow plating, dull deposits, and poor coverage.
  • Replace consumed brighteners and compatible bath components.
  • Filter the bath and keep contamination out.
  • Follow product-specific replenishment instructions.

Troubleshooting

Check the process basics in a consistent order.

  • Dull finish: inspect temperature, chemistry, and contamination.
  • Burned edges: reduce excessive current density.
  • Poor adhesion: repeat cleaning and activation checks.
  • Rough deposits: inspect filtration and suspended particles.
  • Slow plating: verify pH, temperature, and bath strength.

  • Wear chemical-resistant gloves and eye protection.
  • Maintain suitable ventilation.
  • Label every process and storage container.
  • Store incompatible chemicals separately.
